One of the problems facing international teachers moving overseas to take up their new job abroad is the security of their luggage. I'm sure you've heard of the recent smuggling related cases where the accused's defense has been that their luggage was tampered with after it was handed over to the airline. Schapelle Corby, a young Australian, was recently imprisoned for 20 years in Indonesia.

If this is not enough to cause you to worry, it's not always a case of having illegal substances put into your luggage by smugglers. Two years ago, a friend of mine had items stolen from her baggage whilst on a long-haul flight.

Now, if you are travelling through the United States of America you cannot just lock your luggage with any lock. You must use Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved locks, which are freely available and will stop your padlocks from being removed with bolt cutters if your bag is inspected.

If you're happy with padlocks, ensure that you buy good quality padlocks and keep two sets of keys in separate places (in case you lose one set).

Top Tip For You - If you are travelling to the USA and you can't find TSA approved padlocks, try clipping the two zips together using a keyring or cable tie. This will give you security against an opportunistic thief, and not annoy any inspection agents.

Now that you're living away from home, you'll be doing more personal business via the internet. Protect yourself online too with software that encrypts your passwords.

I used to keep all my passwords the same, but that's just crazy. As soon as a hacker finds out one, then all your supposed security is wide open.
