Teaching in New Zealand - Finding a JobThere is no central agency responsible for employing teachers (but teachers must be registered with the NZ Teachers Council, see below), so you will need to apply directly to the individual schools that interest you. This might sound like an impossible task, and a chore. But NZ schools are required to advertise all teaching jobs in the NZ Education Gazette. Which has a searchable database and you can sign up to thier notification service. Their database is not particularly intuitive or user friendly. I recommend that you search the whole list of vacancies when you first decide to look for a position, then sign up for the notification service. If you don't want to do the legwork yourself you can sign up to recruitment agencies. Education Personnel Ltd Oasis Education Ltd When to apply The school year in NZ runs along with the calendar year. We begin the academic year at the end of January (later for some schools and higher education providers) and it runs through to the beginning or middle of December. The school year is divided into four 10-week terms. The summer holiday is over the Christmas period and lasts for around 6 weeks. There are three 2-week holidays between the 4 terms. As you might expect, recruiters are looking for new teaching staff throughout October, November and December, with a mad-scramble to fill places in January. Qualifications Overseas Trained Teachers (OTT) wanting to teach in New Zealand need to have their qualifications assessed. This involves submitting your documents to the NZ Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and paying a fee. NZQA's Qualification Recognition Service will evaluate your international qualification and will issue to you a document that details the nearest comparable NZ qualification. The Service also check that the documents you submit are not fraudulent. The information on what documents you need to submit to the NZQA Qualification Recognition Service can be found here. The documents you submit must be provided with an English translation that has been prepared and certified by a translation service approved by the NZQA. All of the approved translation services are domiciled in NZ. You will need to contact them (email addresses are available here) to enquire whether you can submit your documents electronically, or by registered mail. The basic fee charged for the qualification comparison is $NZ 450. Registration All teachers in NZ must be registered by the NZ Teachers Council. You wil need the NZQA report on the comparability of your qualifications in order to successfully register with the council. You will also need to supply the original documents and statements of service covering the entirety of your teaching experience. If these documents are not in English, then you will need to supply translations, again certified as correct by an official translation service. OTTs must also meet the council's standards regarding thier competency in communicating using the English language. Details of what this means can be found here. You will also be required to produce police clearance certificates. Information on these can be found here. The application form for OTTs is called TC1 and can be downloaded from the site, the cost to process the form is $NZ 120 and must be sent with the application. | |||||||
