Getting a qualification to Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) can have many benefits for your international teaching career and lifestyle:

     •     many international schools consider a qualification in TEFL desirable
     •     you can work overseas in a private language school to gain experience living and
teaching abroad - making yourself more attractive to international schools.

I started my teaching career with a job teaching at a private language school in Taipei, Taiwan in 1997, and I haven't looked back. It took me 4 weeks to complete a RSA Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching for Adults (CELTA), and a month later I was living and working in Taiwan.

I have taught TEFL in Taiwan, Poland, and New Zealand. I also taught for 4 seasons at residential summer schools in the UK. I loved the opportunity to immerse myself into a foreign culture where everyday life was challenging and invigorating. I discovered that I love teaching, and I went on to get a post-graduate diploma in teaching secondary school, which is what I do now in Manila, Philippines.

If you're not sure you want to commit the amount of time and money it takes to get a qualification to teach secondary school, you can start out with a TEFL qualification

A large percentage of the more than 4000 international schools have students for whom English is a second or third language. They often need language support alongside their regular classes. This is a fantastic opportunity that can enable talented teachers who don't have teaching credentials, to teach!

I have researched companies that offer TEFL qualifications online and via distance learning. The industry has changed a lot since I got my qualification nearly 12 years ago, but the fact remains that you will need a qualification to get a good job.
