Teaching in New Zealand

NZ is in the grip of a long term teacher shortage, especially in secondary and particularly in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Technology, Accounting / Economics and English. There are not enough candidates graduating in these subjects to fill the vacancies in schools.

I hope that by providing a list I haven't discouraged teachers of other subjects, because NZ is a great country to live in and teachers are in a position to take advantage of their teaching credentials, regardless of their teaching subject. It's just going to be easier for teachers of the subjects on the above list to find a teaching position.

If you suspect that I am overstating the teacher shortage in NZ, then let this convince you of the seriousness of the situation. The NZ government is offering incentives for teachers to teach in NZ. NZ trained teachers returning from overseas are being offered a $NZ 5000 incentive, and Overseas Trained Teachers (OTTs) who relocate to NZ are being offered an incentive of $NZ 4000.

To check whether you meet the requirements for eligibility, please visit the TeachNZ site.

In addition, schools employing teachers from overseas are eligible for a 'finder's fee' of nearly $NZ 1500 for OTTs and $NZ 3000 for NZ trained teachers. They must employ the teacher in a full-time position for 2 or more consecutive terms, and meet a couple of other requirements to do with priority staffing issues in order to be eligible for the full finder's fee. This is an added incentive for schools to source teachers from overseas.

When to apply The shool year in NZ follows the calendar year, not the academic year as it does in the Northern Hemisphere. The good news is that your Christmas break is usually 6 weeks long.

New Zealand Working Visas for Teachers

British Teachers who hold British passports can get a visa to teach in NZ in four ways.

• if you are young enough (less than 31 years old), you can apply for a 12-month working holiday visa. These visas are issued to young Brits, and come with work restrictions.

• you can enter NZ on a 6-month visitor's visa and apply for a working visa once you have found a job and signed a contract.

• you can secure a position prior to leaving the UK and apply for a working visa before you move out to NZ

• finally, you can apply to immigrate to NZ and attempt to obtain a residency visa.

I am not an expert on NZ immigration and only offer this information as a guide. You will need to check out the specific requirements for obtaining a visa to work in NZ from Immigration NZ.

Teaching in Australia

Australia has a population of over 20 million people and as of the middle of 2005 there were more than 9500 schools. It stands to reason that Australia requires a substantial number of teachers to staff those schools.

Teachers from Canada, the US, the UK and New Zealand will have qualifications that are of a similar standard to those of Australian trained teachers. Also, young teachers from Canada, the UK and New Zealand can enter Australia and work on a working holiday visa for up to 12 months.

Registration
All teachers in state schools in Australia need to be registered by the state. Each state has their own register and so you must apply to each state separately. Here the links you will need in order to register...

In New South Wales the Department of Education and Training operates Casual.Direct - Casual Teacher Staffing System. This system is run statewide and teachers register once and the agency then organises supply staff for all the schools in the state.
